Vladimír Boudnik collection

Jan Staszko was born in 1942 in Český Těšín, he came to Prague at the age of 18. During his military service, he first served as a medic. One of his colleagues at the time was Václav Havel.

He had been interested in art since his student days. He decided to live in Žižkov, which was then a working-class but also artistic district of Prague. There he met his then wife and got to know interesting people (Vladimír Boudník, Bohumil Hrabal and other artists).

On December 5, 1968, Jan Staszko and other friends waited in vain for Vladimír Boudník at the agreed place. He did not show up, so they decided to go look for him in the studio, where he was discovered together with Mr. Drvota. Both were found without signs of life.

Immediately afterwards, the friends present secured the works that remained in the studio. They feared that the works might be destroyed, given the political situation at the time. Each of those present took several works for safekeeping. Boudník's works (mostly experiments, some of them unfinished) that remained with Jan Staszko date from this very day. Others were given to him as a gift directly from Vladimír Boudník as his personal friend.

After the events of 1968 and the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact troops, Jan Staszko finally left the country in 1969 and emigrated to Duisburg. He took Boudník's works with him to Germany and they remained in his collection for decades, from which they subsequently became a family heirloom.
